Creativity, Authorship & the Literary Ecosystem

Readers Need a Living Culture of Human Creativity

Every book begins with an act of creation. Bringing that work to readers can also involve illustration, editing, design, production, publishing, distribution, bookselling, library service, and many other forms of expertise. Together, these contributions turn ideas into works that people can discover, read, discuss, and pass on.

ACRE works to sustain the conditions in which that creative ecosystem can flourish. This matters not only to the people who make books, but to readers. A diverse and durable literary culture depends on opportunities for creators to build careers, publishers to invest in new and established voices, booksellers and libraries to connect works with audiences, and readers to encounter a continuing range of stories and ideas.

Copyright, Compensation, and Creative Sustainability

Copyright and compensation are sometimes discussed as technical industry matters. ACRE connects them to a broader public purpose: sustaining the production of creative work. Policies that affect the value, licensing, or use of creative works can influence who is able to create, what gets published, and the range of work available to future readers.

Our role is to make these relationships understandable, bring evidence and expertise to policy discussions, and support approaches that respect both access to knowledge and the conditions necessary for continued human creation.

Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology

Artificial intelligence is changing how text, images, information, and creative works can be produced, discovered, transformed, and used. These developments create opportunities as well as significant questions for authorship and the literary ecosystem.

ACRE will examine AI where it intersects with the mission: the use of copyrighted works, licensing and permission, transparency, attribution, compensation, the identification and discoverability of human-created work, and the long-term conditions for professional authorship and publishing.

Our focus is not technology for its own sake. It is the human creative culture on which readers depend — and how innovation can develop without making that culture less sustainable, less diverse, or less trustworthy.
