The American Center for Reading and Expression is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening America’s culture of reading.
We bring readers and the literary community together to champion literacy and the joy of reading, protect the freedom to speak, read, and think, expand meaningful access to books and ideas, and sustain the people and institutions that create and share them.
ACRE works through public education, research, advocacy, policymaker engagement, convenings, and partnerships. We connect expertise from across the literary community with the experiences of readers and communities, helping make complex questions understandable and keeping the public value of reading at the center of policy discussions.
Reading is supported by an ecosystem. ACRE seeks to work with readers, authors, illustrators, librarians, educators, publishers, booksellers, literacy organizations, civil-liberties organizations, researchers, community leaders, technology and distribution partners, policymakers, and others who share an interest in a vibrant culture of books and ideas.
The issues ACRE addresses can look very different from one another: literacy and reader engagement, book challenges, library policy, copyright, or artificial intelligence. What connects them is their effect on the environment in which reading happens.
ACRE asks how these developments affect readers: whether people can develop strong reading lives, whether they can find and choose books freely, whether institutions can connect communities with literature, and whether human creators can continue producing the stories and ideas that readers will need tomorrow.
