Literacy & Reading

From Learning to Read to Choosing to Read

Literacy is foundational to learning, opportunity, and participation. Yet a strong reading culture also depends on whether people find reading meaningful, enjoyable, useful, and connected to their lives.

This page will explore both dimensions: the development of reading skills and the conditions that help people become engaged, lifelong readers. We will share research, perspectives, programs, and partnerships involving literacy, reader engagement, book access, and the role of families, schools, libraries, educators, booksellers, and communities.

ACRE will also examine how the wider environment around books can influence reading. Questions involving access, collection restrictions, institutional resources, and the supply of new creative work all ultimately affect what readers are able and motivated to discover.
