Authors & The Creative Economy

Sustaining the Human Work Behind the Books We Read

Readers encounter a finished book. Behind it is a network of human creativity and expertise: writing, illustration, editing, design, publishing, production, distribution, bookselling, library service, and more.

This page will examine developments affecting that ecosystem and explain why they matter beyond the industry itself. Copyright, compensation, contractual and licensing practices, market conditions, and emerging technologies can influence who is able to create, what work reaches the public, and the breadth of books available to readers.

Artificial intelligence will be covered here when it raises questions about the use of creative works, transparency, licensing, attribution, compensation, or the sustainability of human authorship. ACRE’s focus will remain on a future in which innovation and access coexist with a diverse, durable culture of human creativity.
