Reading gives people room to ask questions, encounter different experiences, and form their own views. Protecting that freedom means preserving meaningful access to a broad range of books and ideas, including works that challenge assumptions or reflect lives different from our own.
ACRE’s freedom-to-read work combines public education, legal and policy expertise, legislative engagement, research, and coalition support. We will follow book challenges and restrictions, affirmative protections for reading, implementation of existing protections, and emerging policies that could limit access to books.
This page will feature developments from states and communities, coalition perspectives, research, and practical resources for people working to protect the freedom to speak, read, and think.
